Raise your hand if you've ever been personally victimized by a bad updo. From helmet head to an outrageous salon price tag to it simply falling apart as soon as you hit the dance floor, hair-mergencies happen—a lot. Whether you're performing bridesmaid duties or simply attending a fete, we challenge you to take the DIY approach to your mane. Not only will it save you some money, but it's also way easier (and quicker!) than you think.
Here are six hairdo ideas (courtesy of Harry Josh, John Frieda's international creative consultant and the celeb stylist behind the tresses of everyone from Karlie Kloss to Kate Bosworth) that are equal parts pretty and practical. Happy styling!
Channel your inner cheerleader and rock a high ponytail—it keeps hair off your shoulders and looks tres chic. Brush hair back, then tie your strands into a pony at the crown of your head. Pull on the sides of the tail for added lift. "To make it look more wedding than gym class, wrap a one-inch piece of hair from the ponytail around the elastic to hide it," says Josh. Finish by spritzing hairspray onto a clean toothbrush and using it to brush back any flyaways. Try L'Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray ($13, amazon.com).

Chignon With Deep Side Part
Work your angles all night long by pairing a deep side part with a chignon. Part your hair with a comb (the deeper the part, the more dramatic the look), then gather your strands at the nape of your neck and pull them into a low ponytail. Begin to twist hair around the base, securing with bobby pins as you go. For a black-tie affair or if you want an extra glam touch, slip in a sparkly barrette. (Jennifer Behr has some gorgeous options.)
A braided detail instantly turns up your basic topknot. "The key to this style is keeping it sleek," says Josh. "So prep hair with a frizz-fighting treatment like John Frieda Frizz Ease 10 Day Tamer In Shower Treatment ($13, ulta.com)." Blow-dry hair straight with a round brush, then make a high ponytail. Braid the pony and slowly wrap it into a topknot, using bobby pins to keep it in place. Sparingly apply a moisturizing oil (like pure castor oil) to smooth strands.
Going halfsies has never looked better. Take a two-inch section of hair from either side of your head and braid both back, meeting at the center. Crisscross two pins to join the plaited pieces together (you may need a few more if you have thicker hair). Scrunch sea salt spray (we like Bumble and bumble Surf Infusion, $29, sephora.com) into the rest of your hair to give it a beachy vibe. "Then try further defining waves with a one-and-a-quarter inch curling iron," says Josh. "A thicker barrel creates looser waves."

For a romantic evening out, try an updo of cascading curls. To start, apply a volumizing mousse throughout the roots of towel-dried hair. "Follow by blow-drying with a round brush to give strands moveable body," says Josh. Play up the volume even more by curling large sections of your hair once it's dry. Tie your mane back at the nape of the neck (leaving out a few face-framing pieces) before teasing the body of the ponytail for extra oomph. Then grab one-inch pieces and start pinning them into a bun, keeping hair semi-loose for a soft, unstructured look.
This cool-girl style is the perfect solution for a last minute party invite. Simply spray dry shampoo all-over for added texture and grip, then part hair halfway around the head. Tie up the top half into a pony, then wrap it into a topknot. Spritz the ends with dry oil for a little extra shine then bring on a glass of bubbly.
